About Us

MJT Crane Hire Ltd have been established since 2000 to accompany AB Tuckey now known as Tuckey’s with transporting narrowboats by road where Arthur Tuckey moved the first steel boat made by Hancock and Lane 1969.

After many years the company has a vast array of equipment from cranes crawler, all terrain cranes, lorries, tugs, dredgers excavators and even to the extent of aircraft winching equipment. We are a sole contractor to C&RT with a 30 tonne crane boat – a 30 tonne crane built onto a 50f narrowboat. This was built at great expense this year to allow crane work and craft removal to take place at ease in previously inaccessible narrow locks.

As we specialize in canal based work we do not have to hire in plant as we have excavators, jumpers, compactors, welders and much more plant at hand.

MJT have the most expert and experienced staff in boat lifting and movement in the UK. Although we are midlands based we are often subcontracted to many of the other canal regions and boatyards due to our vast expertise.

MJT are based in the heart of the midlands canal network, very close to Napton Junction. This location is where the grand union and Oxford canal meets a web of waterways and include many large marinas ie. Stockton Top Lock, Napton, Calcutt Braunston and Whilton.

75% of our work is lifting and transporting boats and due to this close working relationship we have with many marinas and boat builders in this area we are the only preferred crane company allowed on to there premises. This is partly due to other companies causing damage and unsafe practices so rest assured you are in good hands.

MJT crane hire have a 93% score in Achilles for Safety. Mr M J Tuckey is an ITSSAR accredited instructor in plant training and is a trainer Supplier to C&RT specializing in complex lifting operations. MJT has trained a large number of the C&RT staff in the South East in lifting operations.

Mark Tuckey is the sole person who personally plans and supervises the complex boat lifting operations to the extent that he is a tug Helmsman to lifting operations supervisor, Appointed person and even crane driver in very complex lifts where two cranes or a duel lift if necessary.

MJT has lifted upto 27 boats in one morning with a total of 52 in one day and have a long standing working relationship with every one in the industry. We have a good working relaionship with C&RT and the Environment Agency.
